Your app idea might be brilliant, but the company you hire decides whether it ships on time, stays under budget and actually survives contact with real users. Indian startups have thousands of dev firms to choose from. Here's the checklist we use with our own clients when they're comparing partners — including us.
1. Check Real Portfolio, Not Just Screenshots
Ask to open the apps in the Play Store or App Store and download them. A reputable app development company will happily share live apps and explain their specific role. Watch for the app's last update date — abandoned apps signal poor post-launch support.
2. Verify the Tech Stack Fits Your Product
Ask which framework they recommend and why: native (Kotlin/Swift) for performance-critical apps, Flutter/React Native for speed-to-market across platforms. If a company insists on one stack for every project without asking about your needs, that's a red flag.
3. Demand Pricing Transparency
Startups get burned by vague hourly estimates that balloon later. Ask for a fixed-scope, milestone-based quote. And remember: a surprisingly cheap quote almost always means cut corners — in design, testing or documentation.
4. See How They Handle Communication
During the sales call, notice whether they ask intelligent questions about your users and goals. If they talk only about features and never about outcomes, they'll build what you say, not what you need. Also confirm the cadence: weekly builds, a shared dashboard and a single point of contact are minimums.
5. Ask About Testing & QA Process
Quality assurance is where small agencies often fail. Ask how many devices they test on, whether they test on low-end Android devices (critical for the Indian market), and how they handle the app review / rejection process with stores.
6. Clarify Who Owns the Code
You should own 100% of the source code, and it should be documented well enough for another developer to take over. "Company lock-in" — where you're trapped with one vendor forever — is a sign of a weak partner.
7. Plan for Post-Launch, Not Just Launch
Apps need maintenance: OS updates, security patches and new features. Ask about support plans and typical monthly retainers before you sign, so there are no surprises in month four.
Your First Step
Shortlist 3–5 companies, run them through this checklist, and ask each for a fixed quote on the same scope so you can compare apples to apples. If you'd like a clear, milestone-based quote for your idea, talk to our team — we'll be honest even if the right answer means starting smaller than you hoped.
